SCOUTING IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Scouting first came to the United States in 1909 with the official founding in 1910. The Boy Scouts of America became a member of the World Bureau (WOSM) in 1922 as a founded member.

The purpose of the BSA is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop personal fitness.

Scouting is designed to achieve its aims through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the adult Scoutmaster as the counselor. Varsity Scouting is an active, exciting program for boys. It had 5 major parts: advancement, high adventure, personal development, service and special programs and events.

Exploring is for young men and women. It provides opportunities to participate in career and recreational programs in association with business and community organizations. Special interest Explorer Posts cover more than 100 different careers. There is also a Career Awareness Exploring program which brings a series of career seminars to young people during school hours.

The Boy Scouts of America is the largest youth program in the country. Membership on January 1, 1998 was 5,632,897 registered Scouts in all sections. The BSA is run by volunteers with a large professional staff to support the field operations.

The BSA shares its resources, program materials and manpower with the World Bureau (WOSM) and brother Scout Organizations. The BSA has in the past made material and financial contributions to less fortunate Scout Associations through the World Friendship Fund.

The BSA is active in Regional and World Scouting activities and events. There are many Scout Troops that participate in International Scout Jamborees all over the world. Scout troops are encouraged to host foreign Scouts in home hospitality and become involved in Scout Exchange programs.
