SCOUTING IN PORTUGAL
FEDERACAO ESCUTISTA DE PORTUGAL
SCOUT FEDERATION OF PORTUGAL
![]()
In Portugal, scouting started in 1911. Many scouting associations appeared. However, only two of them made it through: Unido dos Adueiros de Portugal (which became extinct in 1930) and The Associacion dos Escoteiros de Portugal (AEP), still operational.
CNE is another Scouting organization that is active today. The Catholic Church is the sponsor of this association
In 1922. The International Eucharistic Congress was taking place in Rome, Italy. Taking part of it, was the Braga Archbishop, D. Manuel Vieira de Matos with Dr. Avelino Gonzalves, his Secretary. The Italian Catholic Scouts did a great job serving in the Congress and giving it a youthful touch. The Archbishop was so impressed, that he asked his Secretary: "Can't we have them here, too?"
As soon as they got back to Braga, the work started, and on 27 May 1923, the Braga Local Authorities approved the "Corpo de Scouts Catolicos Portugueses". The next November the Portuguese Government ratifies the movement and approves the Statutes. The Corpo Nacional de Escutas had been founded, the name was changed later.
The CNE grew up fast and determined. By February 1925 the "Flor de Lis" first issue is launched, the official magazine. In 1926 the first National Camp takes place in Aljubarrota; and two years later, the second one takes place in Cacia (near Aveiro). In 1929 the CNE sends a contingent of 26 Scouts to the III World Jamboree being recognized by the International Bureau. Since then the CNE has not missed an international meeting.
In the present day, besides the CNE and the AEP there is also the Associacion de Guias de Portugal (AGP) - a female association - all belonging to the Portuguese Scouting Federation.
There are 52,208 registered members as of January 1, 1998.
