SCOUTING IN THE NETHERLANDS
SCOUTS NEDERLAND
![]()
Scouting in the Netherlands started in 1910. That year the first Scout troops were formed in a few cities. The first national organization was founded in 1910 as well : the Nederlandse Padvinders Organisatie (Netherlands Pathfinder Organisation, boys only). The NPO merged in 1915 with the Nederlandse Padvinders Bond and became known as De Nederlandse Padvinders (NPV). The NPO and NPV were open to boys of all religions, but even so, the roman Catholics founded their own organization in 1938, the Katholieke Verkenners (Catholic Scouts), although the two organizations cooperated in a lot of areas.
Scouting for girls started in 1916 with the foundation of the Nederlands Meisjes Gilde (Dutch Girls Guild), later renamed to Nederlands Padvindsters Gilde (Dutch Girl-pathfinders Guild) (NPG), later followed by a
separate catholic organization, the Nederlandse Gidsen Beweging (Dutch Guide Movement).During World War II, all Scouting activity was banned by Nazi-Germany, but many Scout groups continued to meet secretly, and many Scouts joined the resistance or helped others during the horrors of the war. After the war, Scouting re-emerged quickly, and it's popularity soon reached the pre-war level.
Since 1973 all NPV, NPG, KV and NGB merged into one organization called Scouting Nederland. The English name Scouting was chosen at this point to show no favor to the names used by the original Scouting associations.
The Queen of the Netherlands is the official "protector" of Scouting Nederland.
There are 110,000 youth members and 30,000 leaders and staff.
