SCOUTING IN HAITI
SCOUTS D’HAITI
SCOUTS OF HAITI
![]()
Scouting came to Haiti in the 1920’s. Formal organization and the founding of the Scout Association on Haiti occurred in 1932 and membership in the World Organization (WOSM) in 1932. The Haitian government granted official status to the Scout Association on Nov.10, 1947. At the end of 1998, there were 9,859 registered members. There are about 250 groups around the country.
Around 1980, the Scout Association has made major changes in the program to adapt Scouting to the Haitian reality. The Scouts are very involved in their communities and participate in various community development projects. Several centers around the country, owned by the Scout Association, are dedicated to teach people to read and write. The Scouts have participated in national vaccination campaigns against child diseases. The Scouts also are involved in tree planting and other environmental projects. They are involved in the fight against poverty in several community projects.
Although there is good leadership and Scout spirit, the organization suffers serious economic problems which make it difficult to develop Scouting. They have received economic assistance from Scouts de France to help send a contingent of 7 Scouts to the 19th World Jamboee in Chile in December of 1998.
