SCOUTING IN THE
REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA
The GEORGIAN ORGANIZATION OF THE SCOUT MOVEMENT
![]()
Scouting first came to Georgia around the 1920’s through the British business community in the western part of the country. During the following turmoil and revolutions, Scouting became extinct until about 1991 when communism collapsed. Georgia has become the 147th member of the World Scout Movement.
There was never any Georgian Scouting in Georgia prior to the breakup of the former USSR in 1991. In 1992, students at the University of Tbilisi took an interest in starting Scouting. Scouting was officially founded in 1994 and gained WOSM membership in 1997. Georgia presently has 1,063 members both boys and girls. Georgian Scouts have participated in several World Scouting events. They were at the 1995 World Jamboree in Holland and expect to attend the Chile World Jamboree in 1998-99.
In the summer of 1996, 2 Scouts attended the Jamboree in Denmark. Although they arrived late due to visa problems, they expressed gratitude for being able to attend. They took back with them much information about scouting programs in Denmark.
The SCOUTS DE FRANCE, have been working with the Georgian Scouts to help with organization, training and programs. The Georgian Scouts maintain close ties with France and other European Scout Associations. It is expected that the Georgian Scouts will grow rapidly through the schools.
