Scouting is one of the most respected organizations in Ecuador and has been declared an "institution useful for the public welfare" by the government. Service activities are part of the Scout program. Citizens recognize the Scout uniform and respect those who wear it. Scouts are a welcome sight during earthquakes, as they are well organized and most helpful. Ecuador has frequent earthquakes.
In addition, the Scouts work with the Red Cross, helping in national disasters, community development, literacy campaigns and health campaigns.
In the early 1960’s, Scouts were known to the citizens as the "khaki angels".
Membership is about 5,536 registered members in all sections as of 1998.
