SCOUTING IN CYPRUS

THE CYPRUS SCOUTS ASSOCIATION

Scouting was officially founded in Cyprus in 1913 by N. K. Lanitis and N. Nikolaides, with the assistance of the United Kingdom. In 1961, they were admitted into the World Bureau (WOSM).

The Cyprus Scouts Association is open to all boys and girls including those stationed at the British military bases. The Scouts are one of the oldest youth organizations on the island. Scouts have taken an active part in all aspects of social and cultural life.

The Cyprus Scout Association takes an active part in national, regional and international Scout events. Cyprus was represented at the 19^th World Jamboree in Chile by 36 Scouts.

Membership is 5,013 registered members in 1998.

Program Sections:

Cubs- ages 7 to 11

Scouts- ages 11 to 15

Venturers- ages 15 to 17

Motto:

Scout Oath:

I swear on my honour, that I will do my best to carry out my duty to God and my country, to help other people at all times and to obey the Scout Law.

Scout Law:

A Scout's word of honor is always believed and respected

A Scout is loyal to God, his country, his parents and his superiors and is fair to those under him

A Scout is useful and helps other people

A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout

A Scout is kind to all

A Scout loves and protects all plants and animals

A Scout is obedient to his parents and superiors without question

A Scout is thrifty

A Scout is pure and clean in thoughts, words and actions as well as in body

A Scout respects the work of others and recognizes his own abilities

A Scout is brave, magnanimous, self-confident, decisive and takes responsibility for his own actions
