SCOUTING IN CHAD

FEDERATION DU SCOUTISME TCHADIEN

SCOUT FEDERATION OF CHAD

Scouting in Chad was officially founded in 1960 and membership in the World Organization (WOSM) was gained in 1974.

There are 2 Scout Associations in Chad that make up the Scout Federation. The two are Eclaireurs du Chad, which is for both boys and girls and Scouts du Tchad, which is for boys only. Membership at the end of 1998 was 2,850 registered members.

Scouting in Chad has been affected by political unrest since its founding. Scouting is active in the districts in the south as it is considered too dangerous in the north.

The Scout movement has many difficulties and has few available trained leaders. Scouts are involved in community development activities and conservation. This includes cultivation of cereals, fruit trees and other crop tree planting, digging wells and building housing for the aged and disabled.

In rural areas, Scouts use money earned from the sale of their own farm produce to but medicine. They use these medicines in the pharmacy that they run themselves. Scouts also participate in helping to build schools, and help maintain public places and hospitals.
