SCOUTING IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

THE CAYMAN ISLANDS SCOUT ASSOCIATION

The Cayman Islands Scout Association operates as a branch of the United Kingdom Scout Association. This relationship is due to the Cayman Islands affiliation as a Crown Colony with respect to the United Kingdom. The Cayman Islands are a British dependency. Their Scout Oath and Law as well as other Scouting requirements closely follow that of the United Kingdom.

There are 3 islands that comprise the Cayman Islands. Grand Cayman Island is the largest and most of the population of 35,000 live there. The Membership is about 500 Scouts.

Scouting has existed in the Cayman Islands since the early 1920's. There has been rapid growth since 1990. This is mainly due to a full time Scouting Executive, improved public image and more Scouters including ex-patriots becoming involved. There has been a move to bring Scouting to all communities and islands.

Although the program activities are taken from the British system, it is geared to the Caribbean way of life. Training such as Woodbadge and Leader training are conducted with the help of British and Caribbean Scout Associations.

The government of the Cayman Islands supports Scouting in very positive ways. They provide meeting places, provide funding for an executive commissioner and facilities for camping.

Scouting is active in the Cayman's. Scouts participate in numerous Caribbean Camps and events.

Scouts from the Cayman Islands participated in the 1998 World Jamboree in Chile.
