SCOUTING IN AUSTRIA

PFADFINDER UND PFADFINDERINNEN OESTERREICHS

SCOUTS AND GUIDES OF AUSTRIA

Scouting is the largest youth organization in Austria. It was founded in 1912 and was one of the founding members of the World Organization (WOSM) in 1922. Scouting ceased to exist in 1938 with the occupation of the Nazis who banned all Scouting activities. In 1946, at the conclusion of the war, Austria was again admitted into the World Organization.

Scouting is co-educational at all section levels in Austria. Scout activities often take an international flavor with many countries being nearby. The natural beauty of the country lends itself to many outdoor activities such as hiking in the Alps, camping, rock climbing and rappelling.

There are annual cooperative projects between Austrian Scouts and Scouts in developing countries.

There are 28,000 registered members in 300 units.
